(New throughout, adds comments from Texas governor, landownergroups, background; dateline previously NEW YORK) Stocks Bonds Global Markets By Jim Forsyth SAN ANTONIO, Jan 6 (Reuters) - Texas road officials onTuesday scrapped a $180 billion plan to build a giant system oftoll roads and commuter rails criss-crossing the state in favorof a smaller slate of infrastructure projects. Rick Perry's long-rangetransportation plan, after objections from communities and farmgroups along the planned route, which would have involvedseizing large swaths of private property.

In an "updated vision" for the plan, Texas officials wantto build several smaller, narrower segments stretching from SanAntonio to the Oklahoma border and from the Rio Grande Valleyto Texarkana. "Texans have spoken, and we've been listening," said AmadeoSaenz, executive director of the Department of Transportation. The new plan "goes a long way toward addressing the concernswe've heard." A spokeswoman for Perry said the new plan was welcomed. "The Trans Texas Corridor was merely a concept," thespokeswoman, Allison Castle, said. "Transitioning to an updatedvision for infrastructure in the state is a positive move." President-elect Barack Obama has made rebuilding thenation's infrastructure a crucial part of his economic stimulusplan, and many governors, from California to New York, arealready vying for dollars. The Texas Farm Bureau, as well as landowners along theproposed corridor, had heavily opposed the original planbecause large swaths of private property would have been seizedby the state through eminent domain proceedings.
"This would have been the largest taking of privateproperty in the state's history," Farm Bureau spokesman GeneHall said, noting that Over 500,000 acres (202,343 hectares) ofland could have been transferred to state control from privatehands. Citizens groups like Corridor Watch have opposed theproject for years, warning that Perry's push to raise funds byselling operating rights to private companies in exchange forhighway building funds would raise costs for consumers. "This was the Tony Soprano version of highwayconstruction," David Stall of Corridor Watch said, referring tothe HBO television series about a fictitious New Jerseymobster.
