Over beers after the game at a local tavern, we dedicated our victory to Thurman Munson.I recently finished reading Marty Appel’s book “Munson: The Life and Death of a Yankee captain.” Appel, at one-time the Yankees PR director, co-authored Munson’s best-selling autobiography in 1978.MVP in 1976The follow-up book details Munson’s baseball exploits to be sure, including his MVP season of 1976, his volatile relationship with Reggie Jackson, and the Yankees back-to-back championships in 1977 and 1978. He was tough and he was clutchBut more important, Appel’s book it paints a picture of Munson the man from those who knew him best his family, his friends and his teammates.Appel chronicles the last days of Thurman Munson’s life, including the plane crash that led to his untimely passing at the age of 32.Munson’s closest friends on the team, Lou Piniella and Bobby Murcer, delivered eulogies to their fallen comrade at Munson’s funeral in Canton. In his eulogy, Murcer quoted Angelo Patri, a noted American educator, author and philosopher and my great uncle. In Murcer’s words:I quote these words of Angelo Patri that to me, reflect Thurman so well:“The life of a soul on earth lasts beyond departure. You will always feel that life touching yours. The voice, speaking to you, talking to you in the familiar things he touched, worked with, loved as familiar friends. He lives on in your life and in the lives of all others that knew him”And live he did…He lived…He led…He loved. Whatever he was to each one of us….catcher,….captain… petitor…husband….father….friend….He should be remembered as a man who valued and followed the basic principles of life. The had flown from New York to Ohio for the funeral early that morning, then flown back home from a Monday night baseball game with the Orioles at Yankee Stadium. That night, Murcer insisted that manager Billy Martin lput him in the lineup. He went on to drive home all five runs as the Yankees came back from a 4-0 deficit to beat Baltimore, 5-4.Murcer gave the bat he used that night to Diana Munson, Thurman’s widow He never used it again. Oddly EnoughBAT cited bans on smoking in bars and public places as well as high prices as factors encouraging the formerly smoking-mad French to stub out their cigarettes for good.BAT France said 54.4 billion cigarettes were sold last year in France, down 2.3 percent from 2007. In 1998, almost 85 billion cigarettes were sold in France.A ban on smoking in most public places came into force in early 2007, followed by a ban on smoking in bars and cafes at the start of last year, as part of government efforts to reduce smoking for health reasons."The French market has never been at such a low," BAT said in a statement. "And analysis shows that, when it comes to tobacco, what is lost is never regained."This winter, many Paris cafes have equipped their outdoor seating areas where smoking is still allowed with heaters so customers can keep puffing away while enjoying a coffee or glass of wine in the cold weather. The price of cigarettes, which are heavily taxed, has risen steadily in recent years. The average price of a packet was 5.30 euros last year, up from 2.96 euros a decade earlier.Cigarette sales in France do not tell the whole story, however, as some French smokers prefer to buy packets abroad where they are cheaper."It is clear that from the moment that prices go up in France, people will cross the border where they can get cigarettes more cheaply," said BAT France's head of institutional relations, Yves Trevilly. He said almost one in four cigarettes smoked in France last year was bought abroad, mainly in Spain, Luxembourg and Belgium.(Reporting by Caroline Jacobs, editing by Estelle Shirbon and Nicholas Vinocur) Oddly Enough. My goal is to give you a quick idea of how every Division I school in Tennessee is doing. I will not preview upcoming games, as most teams have the next week off for the Christmas break.1.
